Wienerstube Cookies

I’ve mention a hundred times that I’m not much of a baker. I definitely don’t make cakes, and I am rarely capable of making a decent cookie. But back when I catered, there were a few foolproof cookies that I’d make if some sweets were required by the client. Not just because I was capable of making this particular cookie, but because they are delicious.

One of these is a chocolate cookie with spices, including black and cayenne pepper. I wouldn’t make them for children, but adults always loved the zing these cookies offer. And, they are an easy refrigerator slice-and-bake cookie. I don’t know the source of this recipe; it’s one I copied from a cookbook and pasted on a card.

Then I googled Wienerstube, and found this recipe, from Maida Heatter’s cookbook called “Cookies.” At least I know who to credit.

Some of the wording is different, but the ingredients are identical. This I found online:

The printable recipe is below.

The cookie dough is straight forward. Then you form a log with the dough; I use a little flour to prevent sticking. I did forgot to re-form the log, so it became somewhat oblong!

Baking the slices of cookie dough is also straight forward.

They’re just as incredible as I remember them!

I haven’t thought of these in a dog’s age. I used to make them when I worked for a caterer, who gave me a copy of Maida Heater’s book (the chocolate book) when I graduated. I have long since re-gifted the book but am glad for this recipe — they are the perfect ending for a meal.

What an exciting recipe! I think the spice combination is very tempting. I am not a “fancy” baker, but I do love to bake cookies. And eat them. :-)

these sound wonderful mimi. i do like me a spicy biscuit (cookie). I also like to use black cocoa powder to give a really mysterious look to cakes and biscuits.

Oh yes, I love that dark cocoa. And these are spicy, but no ridiculously so…

I’m not much of a baker, either. But these sound really good. I adore chocolate and love the touch of spiciness! And needless to say, the buttah… May well give these a go. The recipe sounds well within even my fairly limited baking skills.

Hey, if I can make them…. They’re basically a refrigerator slice and bake, so kids could make them!

I love this cookie! We’ve made this recipe a bunch of times — from Maida Heatter’s book. She’s one of the best recipe writers around, I think. Yours look terrific! Thanks.

Mimi, you are my kind of baker! The spices, especially the black pepper, sounds incredibly interesting with the dark chocolate. I also love the oblong shape, even if it was accidental. In some way, it makes them seem even more like a grownup treat. Lovely!
