Wienerstube Cookies
I’ve mention a hundred times that I’m not much of a baker. I definitely don’t make cakes, and I am rarely capable of making a decent cookie. But back when I catered, there were a few foolproof cookies that I’d make if some sweets were required by the client. Not just because I was capable of making this particular cookie, but because they are delicious.
One of these is a chocolate cookie with spices, including black and cayenne pepper. I wouldn’t make them for children, but adults always loved the zing these cookies offer. And, they are an easy refrigerator slice-and-bake cookie. I don’t know the source of this recipe; it’s one I copied from a cookbook and pasted on a card.
Then I googled Wienerstube, and found this recipe, from Maida Heatter’s cookbook called “Cookies.” At least I know who to credit.
Some of the wording is different, but the ingredients are identical. This I found online:
The printable recipe is below.
The cookie dough is straight forward. Then you form a log with the dough; I use a little flour to prevent sticking. I did forgot to re-form the log, so it became somewhat oblong!
Baking the slices of cookie dough is also straight forward.
They’re just as incredible as I remember them!

Those looks wonderful, Mimi!
Thank you Kay!
I am not much of a baker either but I will try to make these on your recommendation. Thanks.
They’re very unique and tasty.
I think they look really inviting, nice and rich! And I love the shape too.
I didn’t mind the oblong look!
Oh wow, I’ve never come across cookies which have such interesting spices in them, they sound delicious!
I was hesitant to make them the first time, but I’m glad I did!
I haven’t thought of these in a dog’s age. I used to make them when I worked for a caterer, who gave me a copy of Maida Heater’s book (the chocolate book) when I graduated. I have long since re-gifted the book but am glad for this recipe — they are the perfect ending for a meal.
Oh my goodness! That’s such a great story!
Yum! You may not be a baker, but those cookies look delicious! And I love the interesting flavor combination in there.
Well as you know you can’t go wrong with refrigerator slice and bake!
What an exciting recipe! I think the spice combination is very tempting. I am not a “fancy” baker, but I do love to bake cookies. And eat them. :-)
You would love these…
these sound wonderful mimi. i do like me a spicy biscuit (cookie). I also like to use black cocoa powder to give a really mysterious look to cakes and biscuits.
Oh yes, I love that dark cocoa. And these are spicy, but no ridiculously so…
I’m not much of a baker, either. But these sound really good. I adore chocolate and love the touch of spiciness! And needless to say, the buttah… May well give these a go. The recipe sounds well within even my fairly limited baking skills.
Hey, if I can make them…. They’re basically a refrigerator slice and bake, so kids could make them!
Those look delicious 😋
Thanks. They’re pretty wonderful.
Delicius recipe, thank you! Wishes from Lithuania!
Thank you!!!
Delicious looking cookies Mimi. Love the twist of them having cinnamon and all spice added in. I do like a spicy bake! :-)
These are so good you can hardly stop eating them!
Mimi, these look amazing! I love the peppery addition too! BTW, your website looks beautiful :)
Thank you so much! I had to quit with my theme because I kept losing control – like even with fonts. Crazy.
Thewe cookies sound like they would have a great flavor. Not just your ordinary cookie.
That’s true. They’re very different!C
I love this cookie! We’ve made this recipe a bunch of times — from Maida Heatter’s book. She’s one of the best recipe writers around, I think. Yours look terrific! Thanks.
Oh that’s amazing! So glad you’ve already discovered this recipe!
Mimi, you are my kind of baker! The spices, especially the black pepper, sounds incredibly interesting with the dark chocolate. I also love the oblong shape, even if it was accidental. In some way, it makes them seem even more like a grownup treat. Lovely!
Maybe that’s true!!!!
Love the comment you wrote next to the pasted recipe.
I always wrote comments on recipes. Especially when I changed ingredients…
black pepper and cayenne pepper on a cookie, now you made me curious about this one, never had I imagined those two on a sweet treat. Thanks for introducing this to us
I hope you try these – they’re quite unique, and much better than they sound!
Spicy chocolate is my cup of tea! Definitely making these !
I hope you get a chance to make these – they’re spectacular!
Definitely unusual spices for cookies, but I’m sure I would love them!
Very unusual! I’m glad I first tried out this recipe, though!
