Gingerbread Liqueur

Well, it’s that time of year once again, with sugar plums dancing in my head. I love all of the flavors of the holidays, yet, not so much gingerbread. I don’t dislike it, it’s just not one of my top holiday flavors.

That is, until I discovered a recipe for gingerbread liqueur, on a now non-existent blog.

I guarantee that this liqueur will make your spirits merry!

Gingerbread Liqueur
Printable recipe below

1/2 cup chopped ginger
1 cinnamon stick
6 whole allspice slightly crushed
5 whole cloves
Fresh nutmeg
1/4 cup molasses
1 heaping tablespoon brown sugar
1/2 cup vodka
1/2 cup brandy
1/2 cup spiced rum

Put everything in a clean jar.

I doubled the recipe, because I’ve made this before and I know how good it is!

Give the jar a good swirl to make sure the brown sugar and molasses are well stirred, then set the jar in a dark cool place for at least a week. When ready to use, strain into a clean bottle.

Since I’m so creative with cocktails, I add 1/2 & 1/2 to some of the liqueur and called it done.

If you really want to be fancy, add a rim of flavored or just pretty sugar. This was cranberry sugar, but I just did it for the photos!

I don’t let the liqueur sit longer than a week. I find that cloves and cinnamon sticks can lend bitterness if too much time passes.

And I found these adorable gingerbread cookies! Redundant, but cute!

I think the liqueur would be good not only with 1/2 & 1/2, but also with a splash of club soda. Next time, because it’s all gone!

I am all about gingerbread anything! I have two trees full of gingerbread/baking/candy (a 2 ft mini and 6 ft) ornaments, we made gingerbread houses for 20 years (I built 5 each year and each family decorated), cookies, cakes you name it. However, I have never had a gingerbread liqueur!!! I guess it’s a must for me to try – just have regular rum though!

Wow, you do love gingerbread! I honestly don’t know what’s in spiced rum. Maybe you can just spice up the spices!

I do like gingerbread, although it’s not my favorite either. But I can’t resist it at this time of the year! This looks good — I do need to make that gingerbread liqueur. :-)

I’m obviously not creative making cocktails, so maybe you can come up with other ways to use this liqueur!

So fun! This is the kind of thing I like to make and give to my book club members for the holidays! This year, they get homemade vanilla, but your gingerbread liqueur is a 2021 contender!

    • chef mimi December 9, 2020 at 12:10 PM - Reply

Nice! Vanilla is a fabulous gift! That’s very nice of you to do. You must like your people!!!

Yeah, I’d say it would if you didn’t add 1/2 and 1/2 to it! I can’t imagine it straight… But it’s fun!

Hi Mimi, I love gingerbread anytime of the year. So, your recipe for gingerbread liqueur is calling my name. When you say fresh nutmeg, do you mean fresh grated and how much did you use. Thanks!

    • chef mimi December 10, 2020 at 6:37 AM - Reply

Yes, freshly grated. Oops. I’d better change that. I’d say about what amounts to 1/4 teaspoon? but more if you really like nutmeg! It’s not critical. Enjoy!

This is totally calling my name right now, Mimi! I do really enjoy gingerbread desserts during the holidays, but I don’t think I’ve ever had a gingerbread drink. What a fun idea!

It’s really tasty. This young woman used to blog back when I started. She doesn’t any longer but I wish I could refer to her blog, cause she created lots of fun things, like this liqueur!

Happy holidays indeed! That is one flavour-packed holiday cocktail. The cranberry sugar looks wonderful, I’d love the sweet and sour flavours it brings to this pretty cocktail.

    • chef mimi December 10, 2020 at 7:06 AM - Reply

I did the sugar for the color, but it ended up being tasty! I also learned not to dip the glass in too much liquid first. If you look closely you can see blobs of sugar dripping down the glasses!!!

Oh boy, does that sound yummy! I agree that adding some 1/2 and 1/2 to it would make a perfect cocktail. Just loving your holiday drink ideas this year!

Thank you! My favorite is what I call “Christmas in Yo Mouth,” which makes me laugh cause i invented it, and it’s just two liqueurs! (I laugh at my bartender skills! Or, lack thereof.” It’s Rumchata and Buttershots, equal parts, and it tastes like Christmas!

One week will do it! Otherwise it gets bitter. So, you’re welcome! Hello Christmas!

This drink looks sooo good! I love gingerbread- so I would have to restrain myself from guzzling down the whole drink in one gulp!

    • chef mimi December 13, 2020 at 6:27 AM - Reply

Guzzling is allowed during a pandemic!

Hey Chef Mimi! Wow, this gingerbread liqueur sounds delicious and adding the half and half gives it a nice creamy look! I enjoy creamy liqueurs. :) I would love to have a taste of this one! Gorgeous photos in this post and that little gingerbread cookie on top is just perfect!

I love that you’ve had it half-and-half to this. This is what eggnog should be! Funny… Our Brandy, vodka, and rum are all the same brands. I don’t think I’ve ever had Captain Morgan rum, but I think it’s in our cabinet because we had a guest who liked it. Seems like a wonderful way to use it up.

    • chef mimi December 13, 2020 at 4:42 PM - Reply

Indeed it is a wonderful way to use it! I didn’t know what to add to the liqueur besides half and half. Ice cream would be good, too!

  23. Cathy December 13, 2020 at 3:37 PM - Reply

This would make an excellent present… providing I didn’t drink it all before I gave it away. LOL

Vodka, brandy AND spiced rum all in a gingerbread liqueur? So that’s three of my favourite spirits and one of my flavourite flavours? This one is a hit for me Mimi!
