Watermelon Margaritas

Well, leave it to Facebook to help me out with a recipe dilemma. My (adult) daughters have bugged me for quite a few years about making these watermelon margaritas again that I’d made once. In my memory, as well, they were so refreshing and tasty. But I didn’t remember how I’d made them.

And then, the other day, June 28th, to be exact, there it was, on Facebook. A memory, dated 7 years ago:

Watermelon Margarita
blender full of frozen watermelon chunks
1 cup tequila, or to taste
Juice of 4-5 limes, about 3 ounces
2 ounces agave nectar

There was no blog back then, but why I didn’t write the recipe down on a recipe card, like I’ve done for 40 years is beyond me.

But, just in time for watermelon season, we’re making this recipe and having watermelon margaritas. Unfortunately one daughter doesn’t live here, and the other is pregnant, so there’s more for the rest of us!!!

The first thing to do is buy a giant seedless watermelon, unless you enjoy dealing with the seeds.

Cut up the beautiful red flesh into cubes, and freeze them in sealable bags.

When you’re ready to have margaritas, fill up the blender with the frozen watermelon chunks, add the tequila, lime juice, and agave nectar.

Blend until smooth.

Serve immediately; they will be nice and slushy.

Don’t be tempted to add a little more tequila. It will mask the watermelon flavor.

Trust me on this.

Definitely going to try this! My favourite is strawberry margarita, but strawberry seasons ends shortly here, so watermelon will be the thing to try.

Mimi – I have had a bottle of tequila in my liquor cabinet forever. TIme to get it out! Will be making these at first opportunity. Always love your blog, I really do.

You’re so sweet! The good thing about these margaritas is that they’re so filling from the watermelon that the tequila doesn’t have a chance!

A less messy way to eat watermelon too! And fruit is so good for us. Win win.

This looks soooo good! I’m not a fan of tequila, but I do believe this would be great with vodka, too. I have fun looking at my FB memories, it’s one of the few things they offer that doesn’t annoy the heck out of me. ;)

    • chef mimi July 12, 2017 at 7:06 AM - Reply

I know!!! That’s really true. Yeah, these would be just fine with vodka, or even clear rum.

I am not a watermelon fan, but my husband is… wonder if the alcohol will make me forget that I am not? ;)

It is HOT here! 100 degrees F. So I need one of these to cool off. Terrific stuff — thanks.

You do know that this is just the adult version of the watermelon spiked with vodka, thrown to the bottom of the pool… Don’t you? Not that I have a problem with that. :)

    • chef mimi July 12, 2017 at 6:51 PM - Reply

Of course you don’t! I’ve always wanted to try the vodka-spiked watermelon. Have you?

Looks so refreshing and delicious. I wonder if they would freeze to make ice lollies out of this recipe or too much tequila?

  23. Vinny Grette July 17, 2017 at 9:20 AM - Reply

Lovely idea! Must try it. Out of almost the same ingredients I make a sloshed watermelon salad which people like – you marinate the watermelon cubes in a seasoned vodka (with lime juice, coconut palm sugar, and chopped mint), chill, and just before serving, you top it with feta cheese. Delicious as is, or on a bed of your favorite lettuce. I love summer!

    • chef mimi July 17, 2017 at 12:27 PM - Reply

Wow. What a recipe. Is it on your blog? Because it should be. Watermelon is one of the few things that makes summer more tolerable to me. And tequila…

One of my faves! I celebrated my wedding anniversary with just such a drink last night

What a coincidence. I just had a watermelon margarita for the first time a few days ago. It was awful: syrupy and sickly sweet. Yours sounds a lot more like what I had been hoping for.

    • chef mimi July 21, 2017 at 2:43 PM - Reply

Oh my no. This is not sweet. Why do people always think they need to add sugar?!!!
